Equipment: Water Softeners

Total hardness in water is made up of Calcium and Magnesium and the levels of hardness in water is directly related to the areas through which the water flows e.g. limestone areas are high hardness water areas. The hardness becomes less soluble so it forms a scale on heat transfer surfaces. This scale acts as an insulator which increases energy usage and in the case of steam boilers can result in boiler failure.  These hardness salts can be removed by passing the water through an ion-exchange resin which  exchanges the calcium and magnesium for sodium salts from the softener which are non scale forming.
